There’s more to French Toast that just eggs and milk

I have been making French Toast for years. All this time, I have made it the same way. I took a beaten egg, mixed it with milk, placed the bread in the mixture for about a second and fried it in the cast iron skillet with a little butter or margarine. However, it did not dawn on me that there are many other ways to make French Toast, until a few years ago. How could I have been so naive? I always wondered why my French Toast always tasted so bland.

Seven years ago, I was fortunate to come into contact with a chef who showed me some different ways to make French Toast. He would not tell me exactly what he did, which is understandable. I guess this was a Chef’s secret. But I was able to figure it out.

He used the traditional eggs and milk as a base for the French Toast batter. But, he added some other ingredients that made all of the difference in the world. Now, I would like to share what I learned about making good French Toast with you.

Superb French Toast Recipe

There are two secrets to making good French Toast. You have to have a good batter, and you have to use the right kind of bread. The bread I recommend is the thick Bar-be-que bread. Or, if you have the time and patience, you can bake your own bread. This always makes superb French Toast. Here, you can download a very good recipe for homemade bread. This way, you can slice it as thick as you like.

The bread makes a slight difference in the taste and texture of your French Toast. However, the real difference is in the batter.

Naturally, you start out with the eggs and milk. In fact, You can use regular milk. However, I prefer cream. This will make your French Toast taste like it was prepared by a World Class Chef. So, I mix one cup of milk or cream to one beaten egg.

Now, the serious stuff begins. Add to this mixture about a tablespoon of brown sugar. Then add spices. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of allspice, 1/3 teaspoon of ground clove and 1/8 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. You can also add a pinch of nutmeg, to give it that extra pizzazz. If you like, you can add more or less spices to suit your individual taste. Now, you have a French Toast batter that is going to give your French Toast character.

This is delicious. But if you really want some good French Toast that will make you the Chef of the Year, there is another ingredient that I recommend. I tried it, and it is absolutely delicious. This ingredient is, amaretto almond liqueur. Believe me when I say, that if you try this, you will have a taste of New Orleans right in your very own kitchen.

french-toastNow that you have your French Toast batter ready, just fry it like you normally would. Serve it whole, sliced in halves, or in quarters. Some like syrup on French Toast, I personally like to sprinkle it with powered sugar, with a touch of cinnamon. Serve it the way you like it. This is your French Toast.

I really enjoy French Toast. To me, it is more than just a good breakfast food. It is an art. It is a delicacy. Try these methods. I think you will enjoy French Toast in a way that you have never enjoyed it before.
