On this day, in 1985, “New Coke” was released to the public on the 99th anniversary of what most people consider to be the greatest soft drink ever, Coca-Cola.
New Coke started the “cola war”
Coca Cola really went after Pepsi in it’s introduction of New Coke. Did Coca Cola make a mistake 31 years ago today? Many people think so.
When New Coke was introduced, the original Coke was suddenly taken off the market. Immediately, many Coca Cola enthusiasts, went to the stores and bought up all the Old Coke they could get their hands on. But what was Coca Cola’s intention?
During the summer of that same year, Coca Cola brought back the Old Coke in a drink known as “Coca Cola Classic”. This may have backfired on the 99 year old product. Many people liked the New Coke instead of Pepsi. Some of these people were determined to remain loyal to Pepsi. Then there were others who swore that the Coca Cola Classic was not the same formula.
In a nutshell, this began a war between Coke and Pepsi. I remember the war very well, and I said, “The heck with both of them. I’ll start drinking RC.”
Lovable Joanie from Happy Days got married today
Also on this day, in 1984, Joanie (Erin Moran) and Chachi (Scott Baio) were married on ABC-TV’s “Happy Days.” This introduced a new series, Joanie Loves Chachi, which didn’t fair so well with the public. Happy Days was a successful TV show, and was a tough act to follow.
Many viewers believed this was the time when Happy Days Jumped the Shark. This means, the point at which a TV show’s popularity begins to decline. It’s ironic that the term originally got its name from the Happy Days series, when The Fonz (Henry Winkler) literally jumped over a shark on water skis in a 1977 Season 5 episode.
